3D content creation: The critical cohabitation between quality and compression.
Invrsion’s COO, Fabrizio Dini, talks about the three big factors to solve the immersive visual economy equation.
At Invrsion we believe that the digital shift to an immersive visual economy is the next big focal point. Product customization and 3D interaction are essential today for brands to ensure a great shopping experience to their customers.
Fundamental success not only lies in the 3D quality of the product delivered, but also in the alignment of 3D imagery to industry standards. We must ensure the accuracy of the final output and prioritize the user experience by optimizing file size for quick loadings.
Across the digital industry, our observation is that the standard online range for runtime assets varies from 3 MB to 15 MB.
This binomial coexistence between quality and compression is a critical point and to solve this equation cutting-edge technical skills are needed. Very tight guidelines on modelling standards, best practices to achieve high quality, efficient and performing content are needed by 3D professionals who are already familiar with 3D workflows but who may not be familiar with an online real-time delivery.
Ideally the best practice is to use the high density-to-low density mesh technique and use the polygon to best describe the shape and bake the tiny details into a normal map texture.
An optimized topology is the first big factor to solve the equation.
The second factor is to preserve the UV space as much as you can without any overlapping and map it onto a single texture, use a metal/roughness PBR material to render a wide range of surface types and produce textures without any lighting setup inside.
Beside these two factors that seem easy to manage, there is a cutting-edge and hidden professional activity that is hard to find. Indeed, it’s easy to confuse a 3D Artist with someone that is familiar with 3D workflow: optimization, compliance to high-level 3D format procedures and technical knowledge are the differentials.
An inappropriate use of these highly qualified professionals often makes the overall customer experience slow and frustrating.
At Invrsion we have all the ingredients, from industry leadership in standards, adherence to best practices, and rigorous workflows created by experienced, qualified professionals, to solve the immersive visual economy equation.
