In the last two years we saw huge leaps forward in how we use technology, with rapid, widespread adoption of services that already existed, like ordering groceries online or having meetings online.
The pandemic’s impact on digitization will bring changes for example into office work, with the evolution of structures that we thought were essential to office culture.
Last December Bill Gates affirmed that he predicts most virtual meetings could move, within a couple of years, from “2D camera image grids” to the Metaverse, that would be in his opinion a 3D space with digital avatars.
We could therefore be ready for the next stage of digital communication: according to Gates, the Metaverse could resemble a form of cyberspace, in which users interact through 3D avatars. Many companies have been working for some years now to be ready for this concept: Nike, Microsoft and many others for example have announced plans to develop a virtual reality-based Metaverse.
Many can agree that the pandemic has accelerated these technological changes that otherwise would have taken years. Microsoft plans to roll out an interim version next year, which will use a webcam to animate an avatar for workers to use in current 2D web screens.
“There’s still some work to do, but we’re approaching a threshold where the technology begins to truly replicate the experience of being together in the office,” Gates wrote.
During the RealTime Conference: populating the Metaverse that was held virtually last December, the representatives of many big companies (Epic Games, Google, Ikea, Microsoft, Walt Disney, NVIDIA etc…) shared their vision about what the future will look like. And that’s approaching towards the Metaverse.
